MT-II (MELANOTAN II)
Melanotan II, commonly abbreviated MT-II, is a synthetic cyclic research peptide derived from alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a naturally occurring peptide involved in melanocortin receptor signaling. Its structural characteristics and activity across several melanocortin receptor subtypes have made MT-II widely studied in laboratory research involving pigmentation biology, receptor activity, neuroendocrine communication, and melanocortin signaling.
MT-II research has explored its interactions with melanocortin receptors associated with melanocyte activity and melanin-related signaling. Researchers have investigated these pathways to better understand the cellular mechanisms involved in melanogenesis and the biological regulation of pigmentation.
Another significant area of MT-II research involves melanocortin receptors within the central nervous system. Laboratory studies have examined receptor-mediated pathways associated with neuroendocrine communication, energy-related signaling, behavioral processes, and other physiological mechanisms influenced by the melanocortin system.
MT-II has a molecular weight of approximately 1,024.2 g/mol and is synthetically produced for controlled research applications. It is typically supplied as a white, lyophilized powder for laboratory investigation involving melanocortin receptor activity, pigmentation biology, and related signaling pathways.
